First observation of SiO2/Si(100) interfaces by spherical aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

چکیده
SiO2/Si(100) interfaces were for the first time observed by a spherical aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscope in a cross-sectional mode. As the Fresnel fringes were not contrasted at the interfaces, the interfacial structures were clearly observed without the need for artificial image contrast. Atomic steps and defects on the Si(100) surfaces were accurately identified. Also, image simulations with the target imaging performance revealed oxygen atomic columns between silicon-silicon bonds. The present instrument is of potential use for semiconductor science and technology, even for the analysis of oxygen atoms at interfaces.

b-Si3N4 by spherical aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy
Modern transmission electron microscopes (TEM) allow utilizing the spherical aberration coefficient as an additional free parameter for optimizing resolution and contrast. By tuning the spherical aberration coefficient of the objective lens, isolated nitrogen atom columns as well as the Si–N dumbbells within the six-membered ring were imaged in b-Si3N4 along [0 0 01] and [0 0 0 1̄] projections w...

The design and construction of a double-hexapole aberration corrector has made it possible to build the prototype of a spherical-aberration corrected transmission electron microscope dedicated to high-resolution imaging on the atomic scale. The corrected instrument, a Philips CM200 FEG ST, has an information limit of better than 0.13 nm, and the spherical aberration can be varied within wide li...
متن کاملAmplitude Contrast Imaging: High Resolution Electron Microscopy Using a Spherical and Chromatic Aberration Corrected TEM
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) is a powerful technique to study materials at atomic resolution. For a conventional TEM, the Scherzer defocus is typically used to maximize phase contrast and resolution. For a TEM with a spherical aberration (Cs) image corrector, Jia et al introduced the negative Cs imaging (NCSI) method to balance the contrast and resolution [1]. This pa...

In the past 15 years, the advent of aberration correction technology in electron microscopy has enabled materials analysis on the atomic scale. This is made possible by precise arrangements of multipole electrodes and magnetic solenoids to compensate the aberrations inherent to any focusing element of an electron microscope. Here, we describe an alternative method to correct for the spherical a...
متن کاملNegative spherical aberration ultrahigh-resolution imaging in corrected transmission electron microscopy.
Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy allows us to image the structure of matter at genuine atomic resolution. A prominent role for the imaging of crystalline samples is played by the negative spherical aberration imaging (NCSI) technique. The physical background of this technique is reviewed. The especially high contrast observed under these conditions owes its origin to an enh...
